As part of my artist-in-residence, I am co-hosting an open studio with my comrades-in-residence Davey Whitcraft and Kamille Kirsching.
My contribution – Mazzolatura: This/That features works on paper (and acetate) related to the play I am rewriting while I am here. But some of the art illustrates some reflections based on writing the play.
The sub-title of the show – This/That – embodies that. This/That is an abbreviation form of the expression:
If you can do this, then you can do that.
Because what strikes me very keenly as I work on the play (which centres on Pope John Paul II’s tacit support for pædophilia in the Catholic Support) is that if multiple societies around the world – the US, France, UK, Canada, Germany, etc, etc – can turn a blind eye to sexual abuse on such a horrific scale, then the natural progression might be the devastating indifference to the current Genocide in Palestine that has allowed the fascists to slaughter tens (some estimate hundreds) of thousands fo innocent people.
